Is Obama Good at A Lead Generation? Yep. Probably Better than You.
Would it shock you if I said that: Obama is an email lead generation master? If you go to http://whitehouse.gov right now, here is what the White House home page looks like. It is a squeeze page asking for your email!
If You Don’t Give Up Your Email, He Tries Again!
Unbeknownst to you, the first time you visit the White House website, he cookies your internet browser. Then, on your second visit to the White House website, if you haven’t given up your email address yet, he presents you with a Second Squeeze Page asking for your email! This time he changes it up and makes it more personal by placing the Email Optin box directly next to a photo of Obama — even his eyes are “pointing” in the general direction of the Email Box submit button. Hmmm… coincidence? Check it out!
Oh — But That’s Not All!
He cookies you again. On your third visit, he assumes you aren’t giving up your email, so he stops displaying Squeeze Pages and sends you forward to the “regular” White House website. Here is what you will see the third time you visit his website:
Question — Is Obama Better at Lead Generation Than You?
I love clients who try to tell me that sending leads and patients to an email Squeeze Page is “unprofessional.” I can now forever present them with the ultimate proof now — I get to now say, “Oh yeah? You think building an email list is too unprofessional for you? Hmmm, well have you ever heard of the President of the USA? Well you must think he’s an unprofessional dumb ass, because he puts you through not one, but TWO squeeze pages when you visit his site.”
(I just love it when I’m right.)
Lessons You Can Learn from Obama:
- Build a Damn List! Say what you will about Obama, but you must admit he is very much aware of and seems consistently focused on the goal of building a list of eager followers. On my private membersite PracticeBuildingCenter.com, I constantly pound the table encouraging our members to aggressively capture patient emails AS WELL AS building a small army of lead generation sites to generate leads which can then be converted into Booked Appointments through strategic email follow up.
- Focus on Platforms to Control Audiences & Lists. I have a long term client who still doggedly refuses to create a Facebook Fan Page or Twitter, because he’s convinced there’s no value in it. What he is missing, is that it’s simply another way to build a list! During the Presidential race before becoming President, Obama masterfully collected millions of leads and built an enormous Herd of Followers (lists!) using Twitter and Facebook. When he needed his followers to take action, he used his Platform & Lists to get millions to take actions that eventually swept him into office
- Multiple Efforts to Capture Email. Look — If your own President recognizes the value of repeated attempt to build an email list, and you aren’t, what does that tell you? ‘Nuff said. When I launched this ChiroBullets.com blog, I installed a custom script that could “tell” when a first time visitor arrived – and it would gently whisk them off to display our Squeeze Page first shown on this page here. Then every visit after that, it displays the blog or the URL they are trying to access. Go try it now. Hop on a computer that has NEVER visited this blog before, and try to access this article. It will “magically” see you’re a first time visitor and whisk you off to our squeeze page. Hmmm… sound familiar?
- Use email automation tools. If you’re not using an email management tool, you’re just plain nuts. Get out of the Do It Yourself mindset. A good email management tool will make you 10x’s what it costs. Take a page from Obama’s playbook — and aggressively build those lists: Email Lists, and on platforms like Twitter & Facebook. “He who hath the bigger list wins.” For proof we need look no farther than Obama.
